The injured, Kamrul Islam Razzak, 55, ran the Chandana High School canteen, where his son and daughter went
A man was reportedly ambushed after being called to the principal’s room at his son’s school in Gazipur municipality.
The injured, Kamrul Islam Razzak, 55, ran the Chandana High School canteen, where his son and daughter went.
Since the incident occurred on July 16, he has been under treatment at a private hospital in Dhaka for eight days.
According to Razzak, he had the school canteen on rent for three years and had six months before his contract expired. “I paid a security deposit of Tk10 lakh and paid monthly rent of Tk25,000.”
On July 16, he was suddenly called to the principal’s office by the school’s Managing Committee Convener, Halim Sarkar. However, the principal was not present at the meeting since he was in Saudi Arabia for Hajj.
“When I went to the principal’s room, I found my two employees injured. They were called in before me for questioning but were instead beaten severely,” Razzak said.
“Halim Sarkar started bringing up false allegations against me and verbally abused me. At one point, 5 to 7 people present there locked the room and started beating me indiscriminately,” said Razzak.
He was taken to a clinic by a local business owner with his left arm broken, and ribcage and hip bones fractured.
“I can’t let my children attend school fearing for their safety. The committee took my keys and goods worth Tk32000 went missing from my canteen.”
“The Convener is a local man of influence, and so people are afraid to stand up against him. But I will file a case with the police, once I am healed,” he added.
A teacher of the school, wishing to remain anonymous, said: “There was a dispute between Razzak and the school’s Managing Committee Convener, Halim Sarkar. Halim Sarkar brought two of Razzak’s employees and beat them up. Later, Razzak was brought in and beaten also.”
In this regard, the school’s Managing Committee Convener and local Awami League supporter, Halim Sarkar, said: “There were no such incidents. Razzak did not pay the canteen rent for over 11 months and so he was called in to settle his debts.”
