2 others beaten up, handed over to police; 6 arrested for beating up rickshaw van puller
At least two incidents of mob attacks were reported in Tangail, where victims in both cases were rescued by police.
In the district’s Ghatail upazila, locals attacked a van driver named Sohrab, 32, on Monday.
Police said he was on his way home on Monday night when local people attacked him, suspecting him to be a child abductor.
Upon receiving information, police arrived at the spot and rescued Sohrab, sending him to a hospital, Bhuapur police station OC Rashidul Islam told Dhaka Tribune.
No one was arrested regarding the attack, he added.
In Tangail sadar upazila, locals assaulted and handed over an unidentified youth to police, alleging that he was a child abductor, on Sunday.
Confirming the incident, sadar police station OC Mir Mosarrof Hossain said: “We took the severely injured youth to a local hospital. We are working on identifying the victim, as well as the attackers.”
In Shantikunj Mor, another youth was assaulted and handed over to police by the locals on Saturday.
In Kalihati upazila, police detained six men on Monday for beating and injuring a rickshaw van puller named Monu Mia, 30, suspecting him to be a child abductor, on the same day.
Confirming the matter, Kalihati police station OC Hasan Al Mamun said: “We arrested the six men after identifying them in a video footage of the incident. We are working to arrest the rest of attackers.”
Asked about the rise in mob lynching in the district, Tangail Superintendent of Police (SP) Sanjit Kumar Roy said: “We are trying to control the occurrence of mob beating in Tangail. We are working to arrest the culprits who are behind these incidents.”
38 others arrested in Kushtia, Sirajganj
Police arrested 38 people in connection with several incidents of mob attacks in Kushtia and Sirajganj districts on Monday and yesterday.
In Kushtia, police arrested 34 people accused of being involved in three mob attacks on Monday.
Four people, including three mentally challenged men, were beaten up in the mob attacks, Doulatpur police station OC Azam Khan and Kushtia Model police station OC Nasiruddin told Dhaka Tribune.
In Sirajganj, police arrested four men for ganging up on and beating up a local thief in Paikpara area, under Sirajganj sadar upazila, yesterday.
The detainees are Hafijur Rahman, a local madrasa principal, Md Aynal, Mokhlesur Rahman and Abdul Awal.
Sources said the four accused attacked the victim, identified as Alam, suspecting him to be a child abductor. Later, the locals handed Alam over to police.
Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, Sirajganj sadar police station OC Mohammad Daud said: “Alam is a local thief and was beaten up. We took him to Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital. We detained the four men involved in the mob beating.”
Cases were filed against at least 400 people in connection with mob lynching in these districts, police said.
