Update : 12 Jul 2019, 02:40 AM

Police on Thursday remanded Ratul Sikdar, 19, in connection with the murder of Barguna's Rifat Sharif.

Inspector (investigation) of Barguna Sadar police station and investigating officer of the case, Humayun Kabir, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

"The arrestee is a student at a school in Barguna's college road," Humayun said, adding that judge at the Senior Judicial Magistrate Court, Mohammad Sirajul Islam Gazi, had accepted a three-day remand for the suspect.

As of now, 12 people have been arrested for the murder of Rifat. Main accused in the case, Sabbir Ahmed Nayan alias Nayan Bond, was killed on July 2 in a reported gunfight with the police.

Till now, seven of them have confessed to their involvement in Rifat's murder, which took place on June 26 in broad daylight in front of the victim's wife and bystanders.

According to witnesses, three people stabbed Sharif around 10am, that day, with sharp weapons, in front of his wife and many onlookers, leaving him critically injured.

Although Rifat's wife, Ayesha Akhter Minni, tried to intervene, she could not stop the attackers. After hacking the victim, the miscreants ran away, and Rifat was admitted to the Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital -- where he succumbed to his injuries.

A surveillance video footage of the attack, which went viral on social media platforms, shows Minni screaming for help during the attack and trying to stop the assailants. But nobody came forward to help the couple.

Later, Rifat's father, Dulal Sharif, filed a case with the Barguna Sadar police station on June 27, accusing 12 people.
