6 held for spreading rumour over Padma Bridge construction

Bangladesh Police issued a circular requesting people not to be misled by such kind of propaganda

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested six people on allegation of spreading rumour over Padma Bridge construction.

The arrestees are- Shahidul Islam, 25, from Narail, Md Arman Hossain, 20, from Chittagong, Md Faruk, 50, from Moulvibazar, Hayatunnabi, 31, from Comilla, Akram Hossen from Ashulia, and another from Barisal.

They were arrested from places of separate districts at different times and handed over to police, RAB Senior Assistant Director (legal and media wing) Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan said.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Police issued a circular requesting people not to be misled by such kind of propaganda. Recently, a rumour has spread through social media saying the need for human sacrifices for the Padma Bridge project. 

This type of propaganda is a serious crime, the circular said.

The police took initiative to take action against those involved in spreading rumours, it added. 

Mizanur Rahman, also the senior assistant superintendent of police (ASP), said: "Separate cases have been filed against the arrestees at the respective police stations under the Digital Security Act."

The Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges, in another statement, said they noticed propaganda spreading by a certain group on social media.

The ministry also mentioned that spreading such rumour is a criminal offence.
