Police have arrested a man for allegedly spreading rumours about abducting and decapitating children on social media in Bhola's Char Fashion upazila.

The detainee is Abdul Shahid Howlader, 24, hailing from the Mohammadpur village of the upazila.

Bhola's newly-appointed Superintendent of Police (SP) Sarker Mohammad Kaiser made the disclosure at a press conference on Thursday noon.

He said: "Shahid has been using Facebook, Messenger and also calling people over phone for long time now to spread rumours such as children are being abducted and decapitated in name of sacrifice."

"Acting on a tip-off, police detained him from the Char Madras union on Wednesday with the smartphone he used to spread the rumours."

During primary interrogation, Shahid confessed to the crime mentioning names of two of his associates involved with this activity. However, their identities cannot be revealed for the sake of the investigation, said the SP, adding that police are also investigating whether any ring is using Shahid to serve their secret agenda.
