A Shariatpur court granted bail to the prime accused in a case filed for raping a college student in the Zajira upazila.
The accused Masud Bepari—son of Zajira Municipality Mayor Yunus Bepari—was released on bail from the district jail.
District and Sessions Judge Mariam Mun Monjuri passed the order on Monday after the defence lawyer submitted a bail petition.
District Judge Court Public Prosecutor Advocate Mirza Hazrat Ali confirmed the matter and said his prayer seeking a seven-day remand was rejected by the court.
According to police sources, on June 29, Masud being related to the girl, lured her to his home and raped her there. At one point he tried to smother her to death.
Masud was arrested and sent to jail on July 1, following a case filed by the girl’s father the day before.
The rape survivor said: “Masud being a relative did not think twice before raping me. Ever since the case, my family and I have been under constant threat. Now that he is released on bail, I fear the worst.”
Dhaka Tribune tried to get in touch with Masud Bepari and his father Zajira Municipal Mayor Yusuf Bepari but failed to get a response.
A local human rights leader and Chairman of the district women’s association, Rowshan Ara, condemned the court order and said she will organize demonstrations including forming a human chain, demanding the re-arrest of the accused.
