Acc-Road Accident

The injured have all been taken to hospital

In Rangpur, three people were killed when a bus ran over the motorcycle they were riding, near Shathibari area of Mithapukur upazila.

The deceased are Madhu, 24, Murad, 23, and Shambhu, 25; Mithapukur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Zafar Ali Biswas confirmed to Dhaka Tribune.

Meanwhile, enraged locals vandalized the bus, detained the bus driver and his helper, then handed them over to Highway Police. The identities of the detainees have not yet been determined.

According to police and eyewitnesses, a Nabil Paribahan bus was on its way to Dhaka from Rangpur, when it suddenly hit a motorcycle—which was transporting three riders—on the highway, near Shathibari filling station, leaving Madhu and Murad dead on spot.

A team of police, highway police, and fire service—with the locals' help—recovered the bodies and sent the critically-injured Shambhu to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment, OC Zafar said.

Baradargah Highway Police Sub-Inspector (SI) Afzal said they detained the bus driver and his helper and brought them to the police outpost. The bus was also impounded by highway police, the SI said.

“I believe the accident occurred because of the driver’s reckless driving,” he added.

In Gopalganj, a woman and her son were killed when a bus ran over them in Gerakhola area, on the Dhaka-Khulna highway, in Muksudpur upazila.

The deceased are Shawon, 27 and her son, Sakib, 7, of Ramchandrapur area, reports UNB.

Muksudpur police station Officer-in-Charge Mustafa Kamal Pasha said a Dhaka-bound bus of Saint Martin Paribahan hit Shawon and her son, leaving them dead on the spot—near a bridge—at Gerakhola.

Ershad, the deceased woman’s husband, said his wife was bringing his son to school when the accident occurred.

Enraged by the accident, locals blocked the road, triggering five-kilometers of traffic gridlock in the area.

In Jessore, two people died in two different road accidents.

The deceased are Monirul Islam, 25 and Tutul, 35.

Two injured are Rana, 35 and Shariful Islam.

Sports and Cultural Secretary of Jessore upazila tank-lorry workers union Nazim Hossain Bahadur said: “A truck lost control and hit a tree on the Jessore-Magura road. Receiving the news, police, fire services and civil defense teams arrived on the scene.”

Jessore police station Superintendent (SI) Rafiqul Islam said: “The injured were taken to Jessore General Hospital. Monirul died on the way.”

In another accident, Tutul was killed under a bus on the Jessore-Shatkhira road.

The incident occurred around 11am.

Jessore highway police station Superintendent (SI) Rafiquddin said: “Injured Tutul was taken to a local clinic where he died. We have sent his dead body for autopsy to Jessore General Hospital morgue.”

The injured have been taken to hospital too, he said.
