The confiscated yaba has a market value of around Tk24 lakh
Thakurgaon court Police Sub-Inspector (SI) Helal Uddin Pramanik has been temporarily withdrawn from his post following his arrest for drugs and yaba possession.
Thakurgaon Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Al Asad Md Mahfuzul Islam confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune over phone on Tuesday morning.
He said: “Superintendent of Police Md Moniruzzaman ordered Helal’s withdrawal. Helal hailed form Naogaon district, and worked at the Thakurgaon court.”
“Helal was involved in the drug business while being employed as law enforcement. Therefore, he has been withdrawn from his post for the time-being.”
On Sunday night, Thakurgaon district Detective Branch of (DB) police Inspector Rup Kumar Sarkar filed a case under the Drug Control Act, accusing three individuals; Helal, his accomplice Manik Das, 25, and Masud Rana.
The arrested duo has been sent to jail through the court, and they are conducting a drive to apprehend Masud as well.
Besides, departmental measures by police will be taken against Helal, the police official added.
Detective Branch (DB) of Thakurgaon police arrested SI Helal and confiscated 8,000 yaba tablets and 2kg of cannabis from his home in Pirganj upazila on Sunday afternoon.
Acting on a tip-off DB police conducted a drive at Helal's home in police staff quarters and arrested him, confirmed Thakurgaon district DB police Officer-in-Charge Rafiqul Islam.
After interrogating Helal, police say they also arrested his accomplice Manik—who is a sweeper at Pirganj police station—although the other accomplice, Masud, managed to escape.
ASP Al Asad Md Mahfuzul Islam said the confiscated yaba has a market price of around Tk24 lakh.
