Firefighters brought the Comilla blaze under control after three hours of frantic efforts

A fire broke out at a sewing factory in Comilla yesterday morning, and another at a grocery shop in Tangail in the early hours.

In Comilla, a fire broke out in a factory in Comilla Export Processing Zone (EPZ) yesterday morning.

Upon receiving information, seven fire fighting units of EPZ Fire Service and Comilla Fire Service rushed to the spot, and brought the blaze under control after three hours of frantic efforts, at around 10:45am.

The fire broke out at a sewing factory named Etashia Interlining Limited at around 7:30 am, said Pranto Nath Saha, assistant director of Comilla Fire Service and Civil Defence.

"The fire inside the factory is now under control. However, there is heavy smoke inside. Firefighters are still working. No deaths or injuries have been reported so far."

When the smoke emanating from the cotton, thread, and sewing material is under control, we will enter the factory, he said.

The fire might have originated from an electric short circuit, he said, adding that the extent of loss caused is yet to be estimated.

In Tangail, another fire broke out at a grocery shop in Delduar upazila in the early hours of yesterday.

The shop was burnt to ashes before the Fire Service and Civil Defence team could arrive, said Delduar police station OC AK Saidul Hoq Bhuiyan and SI Abdul Hannan.

“The owner had called on the 999 helpline, where he was connected to the local fire station. However, they never arrived.”

The fire might have originated from an electrical short circuit, they added.

Rafiqul Islam, the owner of the shop, claimed that fire caused damage of stored goods worth Tk45 lakh.
