Police have held a suspect—Mominul Islam, 26 —for allegedly attempting to rape a teenage girl on the Rajshahi-bound Silk City Express.
The incident occurred on Thursday night.
Mominul is a construction worker, by profession, and he resides in Chapainawabganj Sadar.
The teenager was boarding the train with her grandmother and aunt, and went to the washroom alone. Mominul allegedly locked himself in the washroom with the girl, sexually harassed her, and attempted to rape her.
The girl was rescued by on-duty Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) of Shirajganj railway police station, Ujjal Chandra Biswas.
The ASI said: "We did not hear her screams at first because of the train's noise. Then we had to break into the washroom that had been locked for 40 minutes."
Mominul was beaten up by the train passengers and was later detained by police.
The alleged culprit, the victim, and her relatives were all sent back to Ishwardi—the location of the incident—where Mominul will be kept in custody and the victim will file a case.
