About 120,000 permanent and 20 thousand mobile centres will remain open from 8am to 4pm

The national Vitamin A-plus campaign is set to kick off across Bangladesh on Saturday where children, aged between six months and 59 months, will be fed Vitamin A capsules under the nationwide campaign.

“We want to prevent childhood blindness by administering Vitamin A-plus capsules. Blindness has been reduced significantly. Less than 1% children now suffer from blindness due to Vitamin A deficiency,” Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleaque said while talking to the media at his ministry’s conference room at the Secretariat on Thursday.

Health Secretary Asadul Islam and Director General of Health Services Prof Dr Abul Kalam Azad, among others, were present during the briefing, reports BSS.

Zahid said health workers and volunteers will feed the Vitamin A-plus capsules from 120,000 permanent and 20 thousand mobile centres across Bangladesh which will remain open from 8am to 4pm.

He said mobile centres will be set up at bus stops, airports and launch terminals and other transport points to administer the capsules. At least two trained volunteers are to work at each centre.

Around 2.5 million children aged between six and 11 months will be fed one blue colour capsule each, while around 19.4 million babies aged between 12 and 59 months will be fed red color capsules.

The parents are requested to not bring their children with an empty stomach to be fed the capsules. Children should not be fed the capsule forcefully or while they are crying. Children aged below six months or more than five years or with any kind of sickness should not be fed the capsules.

The rate of children’s night-blindness in the country has come down below 1% following the distribution of Vitamin A-plus capsules regularly.

Feeding the capsules not only keep the children safe from night-blindness, it also increases their immune system, keep their eyesight perfect, bring down the child mortality rate and ensure their natural growth among other benefits.
