Police arrested a man for raping an undergrad student and using the footage to blackmail her in Kaliganj upazila of Satkhira.
The girl is a fourth year student at the College of Home Economics, a constituent college of Dhaka University, studying under the department of child development and social relationship.
The prime accused Abdul Hai, alias Raju, 26, was arrested and sent to jail following a court order on Tuesday.A case was filed with Kaliganj police station by the rape survivor on May 22.
According to the case statement, Raju and the girl met when they came together to raise money for a mutual friend who was diagnosed with cancer.
On April 14, Raju lured the girl on her way to her hometown, to a distant relative’s house. He held her as a hostage with a knife and raped her there. He also filmed the incident and used it to extort Tk1.7 lakh and a laptop from the girl.
On May 22, Raju once again called the girl and demanded Tk2 lakh, after which, the girl told her parents and filed the case.
Kaliganj police station Inspector (Investigation) SM Azizur Rahman said: “A case was filed based on which the main accused was arrested. We also recovered the girl’s laptop from his possession.”
