12 shops have been destroyed by the fire
At least 12 shops have been destroyed by a fire in a market in Gopalpur, Tangail, incurring a loss of nearly Tk5 crore, the businessmen in the markets have claimed.
The incident happened on Saturday around 8am. It took five units of the fire service to douse the fire over two hours.
Some businessmen said the fire started in a clothes shop.
There are six hardware shops, five shoe shops, and one clothes shop among the damaged stores.
Tangail fire service Deputy Assistant Manager Abdur Razzak said, five units of fire service from three stations—of Gopalpur, Dhonbari, and Modhupur—responded to the scene to control the fire.
He added that because of dye and various chemicals, the fire spread quickly. "The fire may have been sparked by a short circuit in the Apon fabrics shop and said that one person was injured due to smoke inhalation," he said.
Businessmen from the 12 damaged shops have alleged that they have suffered damage worth Tk4 crore and 41 lakhs.
