A female college student in Narsingdi has been set on fire by miscreants, burning 20% of her body.

The incident occurred near the Birpur area of Narsingdi municipal town around 8:30pm on Thursday.

The victim, 22, is a resident of the mentioned area, who passed her HSC examination last year and has not yet enrolled in university.

Meanwhile, Detective Branch (DB) of police has detained a suspect named Sanjib Roy, 24, in connection to the incident.

Sanjib, son of Nani Gopal—and brother-in-law of the victim's brother—was arrested from his residence in Purbopara village in Raipura upazila early on Friday.

According to the victim’s family, she was on her way home from a nearby store when two miscreants grabbed her and took her to a secluded nearby location. Then they poured kerosene on her and set her on fire. They fled following the incident.

After hearing her screams, locals rescued the victim and took her to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital at first, and later to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

Confirming the matter, Narsingdi Superintended of police Miraz Uddin Ahmed said: "Evidence of the attack has been recovered from the scene and a case will be soon filed on this."

Narsingdi city outpost Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman told Dhaka Tribune: “We have already spoken to the victim’s family and inspected the crime scene. It will only be possible to determine the motive behind the crime and identify the others involved in it after an investigation.
