His former wife has been hospitalized with 50% burn injuries
A man committed suicide after allegedly killing his step-daughter and injuring his former wife by setting the latter’s house on fire in Hatempur village of Pathorghata upazila in Barguna in the early hours of Thursday.
The deceased were identified as Bellal Hossain, 35, of Taltoli upazila, and his stepdaughter Karina, 10, of Pathorghata upazila, confirmed Patharghata police station OC Hanif Shikhdar.
Hanif said: "Bellal's body was found hanging near a canal in Chhailatala village. The bodies of both deceased were sent to the Barguna General Hospital morgue for autopsy.”
Bellal’s former wife Sajenur Begum, 30, is battling for her life at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital with 50% burn injuries and will be sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital when her condition improves, said the hospital’s Director Dr Bakir Hossain.
Quoting Sajenur, her cousin Fatema Begum said Bellal set Sajenur's house on fire when she and Karina were asleep. A machete-wielding Bellal also prevented their escape from the burning house.
Md Ibrahim Hossain, another cousin of Sajenur, added that marital discord between Bellal and Sajenur was common occurrences after their marriage.
“Local arbitrations were organized several times to solve their issues, but to no avail. During those, Bellal had threatened to burn Sajenur and her daughter alive,” he claimed.
