Images and video footage of the torture after hitting the social media, triggered widespread criticism and outrage
A Union Parishad (UP) member was arrested for his involvement in the reported torture of two ninth grader students in the Nalchity upazila of Jhalakathi.
The arrested Rafiqul Islam is ward number 9 UP member of the Siddhakathi union and also the joint secretary of Jubo League's local unit. He was arrested from his residence in the Chouddoburia village on Monday night.
The victims are - Sajib Hossain Khan, 14, and Rifat Hossain Joy, 14, are students of ZA Bhutto Secondary School.
On Monday, Joy's father filed a case with the Nalchity police station accusing Rafiqul, police constable Shah Alam and five others.
On Sunday morning, Shah Alam had caught the boys for reportedly stealing pigeons from his house. Rafiqul ordered the children be tied to a tree and tortured. At that time, Alam cut off Joy's hair.
They also took images and video footage of the torture and uploaded them on the social media, which triggered widespread criticism and outrage.
Joy told reporters that they were held captive from Sunday night till Monday evening and continuously tortured. At one point police constable Shah Alam cut off his hair.
Joy’s father Abdul Kuddus said: “The allegations against my son are untrue. He and his friend were tortured for no good reason and we want justice.”
Shakhawat Hossain, officer-in-charge of Nalchity police station said: “We have already arrested an individual in this connection and we are trying to arrest the accused in the case filed.”
