Three police constables were also injured in the incident

Three Rohingya suspected criminals have been killed in a reported “gunfight” in Teknaf upazila.

The incident occurred near the Leda Rohingya camp early on Friday.

The three deceased are Shamsul Alam, 35, son of Nur Mohammad; Nur Alam, 21, son of Mostafa Ahmed; and Habib, 20, son of Azizur Rahman.

Both Shamsul and Nur Alam were from camps of Ukhiya’s Thaingkhali and Habib was from Teknaf’s Leda camp.

Confirming the matter, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Teknaf police station Prodip Kumar Das said: “The deceased were kidnappers and criminals. A few days ago they kidnapped a three-year-old and demanded Tk5 lakh as ransom. Later, the child was rescued.”

“We conducted a drive in the area responding to a tip-off. Upon seeing us, the kidnappers opened fire on us. We fired back in self-defence,” the OC added.

Later police retrieved the three bullet-injured suspected kidnappers, who died on their way to hospital. The dead bodies were then sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital Morgue for autopsy.

Police also recovered three guns and eight rounds of bullets from the spot.

Three police constables—Saikat Barua, Arshedul, and Sekandar—were injured in the incident and admitted to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex.
