Suspected drug trader killed in Teknaf ‘gunfight’

A suspected drug trader has been killed in a reported gunfight with police in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar.

The incident occurred in Katakhali area of Whykong union in the upazila around 3:30am on Monday.

The deceased is Mufizur Rahman, 35. He was on the list of 1,151 drug smugglers and dealers prepared by the home ministry last year, confirmed Teknaf police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Pradip Kumar Das.

Three police officials were also injured in the incident.

The police official said: “Based on the information disclosed by Mufizur after he was arrested, police conducted a drive in the area to find consignments of yaba tablets, taking him along with them.”

“Upon realizing the presence of police, Mufizur’s associate drug traders, lurking there, opened fired at them,” he said.

The police force fired back at them in self-defence, triggering the gunfight, he said. At one point, Mufizur was injured by a bullet. However he died on the way to the hospital, the OC added.

The OC further said: “Mufizur’s body has been kept at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy.”
