A 15-year-old boy has confessed in court to raping an elderly woman, who is reportedly a centenarian, in Tangail’s Madhupur upazila on Tuesday evening.

The boy gave his confessional statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure to Senior Judicial Magistrate Sujan Kumar Karmakar yesterday afternoon, confirmed case investigation officer Sub-Inspector (SI) Zubaidul Haque.

The judge also ordered the boy to jail after recording his statement.

The victim gave her statement to Senior Judicial Magistrate Nowrin Mahbuba yesterday as well.

Her family and locals have vehemently condemned the heinous crime and demanded exemplary punishment for the alleged rapist.

The woman, who is blind and unable to walk due to her old age complications, also underwent medical tests at the 250-bed General Hospital, Tangail yesterday.

Hospital Superintendent Dr Narayan Chandra Saha said a three-member medical board was overseeing the victim’s treatment. “We will know the results of her tests over the next two or three days.”

The boy was arrested on Wednesday night hours after the victim’s son filed a case accusing him at Madhupur police station, said the station’s OC Tarik Kamal.

According to locals and family members, the boy broke into the old woman’s room, gagged her and raped her Tuesday evening at her house in Fulbaghchala union.

She had fallen sick after the incident, but her family did not take her to a hospital fearing social embarrassment. She was taken to the hospital yesterday for the first time since the incident.

Madhupur police SI Zubaidul added that the arrestee was sent to jail following the court order yesterday and the victim handed over to her family.
