A suspected drug trader has been killed in a "gunfight" with police in Teknaf of Cox's Bazar.

The deceased is Md Hanif, 38. The gunfight occurred near Marine Drive in Teknaf Sadar upazila, in the early hours of Thursday, Pradip Kumar Das, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Teknaf police station, confirmed.

Pradip said: "Based on information provided by Hanif, we conducted a drug drive in the Marine Drive area. However, upon seeing the police, a group of drug traders started firing at them, prompting the police to fire back."

Hanif was injured in the gunfight, and later declared dead—by the doctor on duty—after being admitted to Teknaf Sadar Hospital, the OC added. His body has been sent to Cox's Bazar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Pradip added that three police officers were injured in the gunfight. Police recovered arms, bullets, and yaba from the spot.
