The woman was a psychiatric patient and was on regular medication
A woman committed suicide by pouring kerosene on herself and setting herself ablaze in the Faridganj upazila of Chandpur.
The incident took place at her in-laws house in the upazila’s Jamalpur village, reportedly after a domestic disturbance with her husband Monday night.
The deceased Tahmina Akter, 22, suffered major burns and was initially taken to the Chandpur Sadar Hospital but died on the way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
She was married to Deen Islam, who was detained by police for interrogation, but was released soon after.
The deceased’s father Kamal Hossain said: “Tahmina confessed to setting herself on fire, when I went to visit her at Chandpur Sadar Hospital. My daughter is a psychiatric patient and is on regular medication. But, being at her in-laws, she was not taking them.”
Chandpur Superintendent of police Mizanur Rahman said: “We have visited the site after information. We are investigating whether there were any criminal offences regarding the incident.”
“The woman was on psychiatric medication. We suspect the incident resulted from either the domestic quarrel or from not taking the regular medications.”
