Comilla University student detained for hurting religious sentiments

His comment triggered much anger and criticism after it went viral on Facebook

Police on Sunday arrested Joy Deb, a student of Comilla University, for reportedly hurting the religious sentiments of Muslims.

On Saturday, in a videotape posted on the verified Facebook page of Voice of America, Joy had commented: "All the Muslims of the world believe in terrorism, which was taught by Muhammad SM."

His comment triggered much anger and criticism after it went viral on Facebook.

Later, Joy deleted his comment and asked for pardon.

Students of Comilla University formed a human chain on the campus on Sunday to protest against Joy's highly objectionable comment, and demanded his exemplary punishment.

The students also demanded that the university administration suspend Joy.

According to the Digital Security Act, 2018, Section 28, Sub-section 1, Joy’s comment is a punishable offence.

Kotwali police station Sub-inspector Md Imam confirmed the matter, saying: “Police detained him over his derogatory comment against Islam and the case is under process.”

Comilla University Proctor Dr Kazi Mohammad Kamal Uddin said: "I have heard about the matter.

“In this regard, steps will be taken against him according to the university law.”
