Suspected criminal killed in Rangpur ‘gunfight’

Five members of the police were injured in the incident and taken to hospital

A suspected criminal has been killed in a reported “gunfight” with police in Rangpur. 

The incident occurred in Purbo Isali area of Gangachara upazila on Thursday night.

The deceased, Shahidul Islam Sumon, was son of Moheshar Ali of Rudreshwar village under Kaliganj upazila of Lalmonirhat district.

Members of the Gangachara police station arrested Sumon and based on his information, went on a drive with him to recover weapons.

Assistant Superintended of Police (ASP) of Rangpur police station, Saifur Rahman said: “Upon reaching the spot, his associates opened fire on us, forcing us to strike back.

“Sumon was shot dead in the gunfight and five members of the police were injured; they have been admitted to hospital.”

Police have recovered Sumon’s bullet-riddled body and sent it to Rangpur Medical College Hospital Morgue for autopsy.

He was carrying a gun and 22 yaba pills with him.

The ASP added: “Sumon had ten cases filed against him, including for rape and drugs.”
