Works for protecting the embankments are underway

As water pressure in Khulna rivers has been increasing due to cyclone Fani, embankments in eight to ten regions of Koyra and Dacope upazilas are in danger of collapse during a tide.

Works for protecting the embankments are underway with the help of Koyra administration and people who volunteered.

Embankments in Dosh Ani, Harinkhola, Ghatakhali, and many other regions of Koyra upazila are at risk of subsiding due to the water pressure, whereas Golkhali, Matiabhanga, Mollapara of Bedkashi union of the upazila have already been flooded.

Roads in Baranpara of Dacope upazila, and Kachi Baniya and Baroaria areas of Batiaghata upazila may also get flooded.

Koyra Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Shimul Kumar Saha, confirming to Dhaka Tribune on Saturday, said: “Although the water pressure is increasing, there has been no news of any embankment collapsing. However, if the situation persists, there is a possibility that embankments in a few areas will collapse.

“As the Ghatakhali embankment is quite prone to erosion, people are working voluntarily to protect the dam since morning.”
