The aftermath has left over a hundred families under the open sky
Over a hundred houses have collapsed and trees have been uprooted in Chandpur as cyclonic storm Fani struck the coastal areas of Bangladesh.
The tragedy took place in Rajrajeshwar union of Chandpur Sadar Upazila around 3:30 am Saturday night.
Confirming the matter, Upzaila Parishad Secretary Mizanur Rahman said: “The Rajrajeshwar union is surrounded by the Padma and Meghna rivers and does not have many trees. The Cyclonic storm first hit the Manderbazar area of the union. Later it hit Majidkandi and Shilarchar areas.
“The shade of Chirarchar Shelter Project has been blown away as the cyclonic storm hit the area.“
However there has not been any report of fatality. The inhabitants were warned through announcements to move to safer places, Mizanur added.
“The union is surrounded by rivers, and yet there is no shelter centre here. Upon being notified of the cyclonic storm, people were moved to Mujaffariya Dakhil Madrsa, Rajrajeshwar Primary School and Chirarchar Primary School”, he further said.
Kanij Fatema, UNO of Chandpur Sadar Upazila, said: “Almost 50 houses have been completely destroyed by the Cyclonic storm. The rest of the houses have been partially destroyed. It is quite impossible for us to go on the other side of the river in this situation.
“However, the Union Parishad chairman has been ordered to deliver dry food over there. Those who have faced damages are being listed. We are ready to provide them with all sorts of help and cooperation needed."
