A man has been killed in a clash over the ownership of a fish enclosure in Ashashuni of Satkhira.

Nazrul Islam Gain, 45, was killed near Baliapur Beel in the Shobhnali union, under the Ashashuni upazila, on Wednesday morning, confirmed Ashashuni police station Officer-in-Charge (OC), Biplob Kumar Nath.

The deceased's brother, Union Parishad (UP) member Kayuum Gain, said: "Local UP Chairman Monaem Hossain Sana and UP member Nazrul Islam Gain have had a dispute over a 9-acre land of fish enclosure in Baliapur Beel, for the last 20 years.

"On Tuesday night, Monaem brought a gang of 45 supporters wielding locally made weapons, to claim the land from Nazrul," Kayuum said. "To retaliate, Nazrul brought his own group of supporters on Wednesday morning."

A clash ensued, during which Monaem, finding Nazrul alone, hacked him with a chopper. Locals rescued Nazrul and took him to Satkhira Sadar Hospital.

When his condition deteriorated, Nazrul was transferred to the Khulna Medical College Hospital. He died on his way to the hospital, Kayuum said.

When contacted, UP Chairman Monaem Hossain Sana denied his involvement in the incident.

The OC said: "No one has officially lodged a complaint regarding the matter, yet. We will take legal action after someone officially files a case."
