A policeman in Chapainawabganj has been sentenced to three years in prison with an additional six months for not paying a fine of Tk10,000 in a dowry and physical assault case.
Showkat Ali, magistrate of the Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal-2, pronounced the guilty verdict on Monday in presence of the defendant.
The convicted policeman, Ujir Ali, had previously worked for the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) at its headquarters in Dhaka.
According to the court transcript, Ujir married Shahnaz Khatun in June 2012. Soon after the wedding, Ujir resorted to beating up his wife and demanding dowry from her.
The Women and Child Abuse Prevention court ordered police to investigate the matter after Shahnaz filed a dowry and assault case against the accused in January 2018.
After concluding the investigation, Chapainawabganj Sadar Police Station Sub-Inspector Rony Shaha submitted a chargesheet to the court against Ujir Ali on April 24, 2018.
The magistrate delivered the verdict after listening to witness testimonies and concluding arguments, informed Chapainawabganj Additional Public Prosecutor Advocate Anjuman Ara.
