A teenage wife has allegedly been beaten to death in Madaripur's Panchkhola union.

Police recovered the “hanging body” of 15-year-old Chandni Akhter on Sunday and sent it to Madaripur Sadar Hospital for autopsy.

Chandi's husband and in-laws have gone on the run since her death.

Local law enforcement sources informed that Chandni got married a year ago to Riyad, who is reportedly a drug addict.

Since then, Chandni's in-laws and her husband had constantly tortured her, both physically and mentally, for dowry and money for buying drugs, according to neighbours.

The neighbours tipped off police after the family went on the run following Chandni's death on Saturday night. They reported seeing multiple wounds on the victim's body.

Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, Chandni's father, Abul Howlader, said: "They [the in-laws] used to beat her regularly for dowry and money to buy drugs. This is an act of premeditated murder. I want justice for my daughter's death."

Panchkhola union parishad member and a witness to the autopsy, Dulufa Begum, confirmed that there were multiple wounds on Chandni's body.

However, Madaripur Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Kamrul Hasan said they had retrieved a "hanging body" from the house.

"A case has been filed in this regard with the police station. But we cannot confirm whether it was murder or suicide before getting the autopsy report," the OC added.
