A sub-inspector (SI) has been closed and a man arrested for reportedly taking extortion money from locals in Tangail.
SI Jasmine Akter was closed to the Tangail Police Lines and police detained Bakkar Hossain from Rakkhita-belta village of Tangail Sadar upazila on Saturday, confirmed Tangail Superintendent of Police (SP), Sanjit Kumar Roy.
A three member Investigation team has been formed to investigate the matter he added.
According to locals, a woman named Rezia Begum was murdered on March 28 this year. Following a case filed against unidentified accused in the incident, SI Jasmine detained innocent locals at random with the help of Bakkar, who was acting as a source for the police.
Si Jasmine and Bakkar both extorted money from the locals for their release.
Harez Ali, a village local, said: "I am a commoner. Police brought me to jail last week. They released me for Tk20,000."
Another local, Sufia Begum, said: "Police arrested my husband. Then the police released him after we paid Tk30,000. We demand the transfer of SI Jasmine.
Hazi Aynal Hoque, a local of the same village, said Bakkar demanded Tk50,000 at his house on Saturday. Aynal Hoque with the help of other upset locals then captured Bakkar and handed him over to the police.
Later, SI Jasmine threatened the locals, saying no one would be spared if anything happened to Bakkar, Aynal added.
Contacted, SI Jasmine denied the allegations against her.
