Road crashes kill 12 in seven districts

At least 12 people were killed and four others injured in separate road accidents across the country on Sunday.

In Chandpur, at least six people, including a woman and her son, were killed after a bus hit an autorickshaw in Shahrasti upazila around 9am.

The deceased are Jannatul Ferdous, 28, her son Ruman, 8, Ranjit Chandra, 52, Fakhrul Islam, 75, Abul Kalam, 62, and Shahjahan, 45.

Five autorickshaw passengers were killed on the spot in the accident on Chandpur-Cumilla regional road, while Shahjahan died on his way to the hospital, Shah Alam, officer-in-charge of Shahrasti police station, said.

Two other passengers were also injured in the accident. They have been hospitalized.

In Feni, a 45-year-old travel agent named Khorshed Alam was killed and two others were injured after a truck hit an autorickshaw at Anandapur in Fulgazi in the morning.

The injured were admitted to Feni Sadar Hospital.

Confirming the incident, Feni Sadar Hospital Resident Medical Officer Abu Taher said the two are in critical condition. 

In Chuadanga, a motorcyclist died after being hit by a truck. 

The deceased is Shanto Miah, 30, son of Asir Uddin, resident of Makhaldanga village.

The accident took place on Chuadanga-Meherpur road at Bhalaipur intersection in Sadar upazila around 5am, Abdus Salam, deputy director of Chuadanga fire service, said.

In Laxmipur, the death of a madrasa student in a road accident sparked protest at Shakchar area in Sadar upazila in the morning.

Yasin, 8, a class III student of local Hamid Miazi Madrasa, was killed after a speeding pickup van hit him while he was crossing road on his way to the madrasa around 10am.

Agitated locals blocked the road and halted vehicular movement, reports the UNB.

Police later intervened and brought the situation under control, Md Lokman Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sadar police station said.

In Brahmanbaria, a truck ran over and killed a farmer in the districts Sharail upzila, around 6am.

The deceased is Abdul Kuddus, 32.

Agitated locals blocked the road and halted vehicular movement for almost 20 minutes. Later, police brought the situation under control.

“A group of farmers were crossing the roads on their way to the paddy field when a truck hit Kuddus”, Hossain Sarkar, officer in charge of Khatihata Highway said adding that 

Kuddus died on the spot.

In Dinajpur, a pick-up van lost control and hit a truck on Dinajpur-Thakurgaon Road in the morning. The pick-up driver died on the spot.

In Tangail, an unidentified young man was hit by a truck at Madhupur bus stand while crossing the road in the evening.

Madhupur police OC Shafikul Islam said the man died on the spot. His body has been brought to the police station. Police are trying to identify him.
