A police constable has gone missing after falling in the middle of the Meghna River during a clash with fishermen in Chandpur.

The incident occurred in Charkoralia area in Haimchar upazila early Saturday.

The missing policeman is Mosharraf Hossain, hailing from Sitakundu.

Confirming the matter around 10:30am on Saturday, Sheikh Mohsin Alam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Haimchar police station, said: "A team of ours conducted a drive in the area Friday night to arrest a warranted accused. However, a group of fishermen attacked the team assuming that the policemen were coming to arrest them for catching fish defying the ongoing ban."

"As the fishermen attacked the boat carrying the cops with bamboo sticks and brick chips, policemen fired five rounds of blank shot to bring the situation under control."

Constable Mosharraf sustained injuries during the clash and fell into the river, said the OC.

Fire Service and river police are continuing with rescue operations, as Mosharraf still remains missing, the OC added.
