Deadlock situation at Barisal University (BU) campus continued for the 29th day on Wednesday to press home their demand for the removal of Vice Chancellor Prof SM Imamul Huq.

Agitating students went on hunger strike till death from Wednesday around 10am in front the academic building to press home their demand.

Barisal University Teachers Association (BUTA) and employees associations also expressed their solidarity with the demand of the students for the removal of the VC and protested irregularities, said BUTA Secretary Abu Zafar Mia.

Belayet Hossain Talukder, joint secretary (University) of Ministry of Education said, BU VC already submitted application for extension of leave till end of his tenure and it would be forwarded to the concerned authority.

The tenure of VC Imamul Huq is set to expire by May 30, if it is not renewed, confirmed Dr AKM Mahbub Hasan, treasurer and acting VC to the Dhaka Tribune.

BU students began protests on March 27, when VC, Prof SM Imamul Huq, said students who had foiled an Independence Day program were “razakarer bachcha," or, the children of Pakistani collaborators.

On March 28, authorities shut the university for an indefinite period, amid student protests demanding removal of the VC for his comment.

On March 29, Prof Imamul Huq expressed his regret about his comment, saying it was misunderstood by the students.

The acting registrar and public relations officer of BU have been declared persona non grata by students, who claim they were appointed in violation of rules and regulations regarding qualifications and experience.
