The eight-year-old died in an explosion at a hotel in Sri Lanka on Sunday
Awami League leader Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim’s grandson Zayan Chowdhury, who was killed in a bomb attack in Sri Lanka on Sunday, has been buried at Banani Graveyard in Dhaka.
The eight-year-old was laid to rest around 5:45pm on Wednesday, following a namaz-e-janaza after the Asar prayers at Chairman Bari playground.
Family members, relatives, leaders and activists of Awami League along with common people attended the namaz-e-janaza where Zayan’s grandfather Sheikh Selim talked on behalf of the family.
In his speech, Sheikh Selim expressed his gratitude to people who expressed condolences on Zayan.
He also urged people to pray for his son-in-law Mashiul Haque Chowdhury for his early recovery.
Earlier, the child’s body arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 12:45pm, said Awami League’s Office Secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap.
From there, the body was taken to Sheikh Selim’s Banani residence around 1:30pm, before being taken to the Chairman Bari playground for the janaza.
Prime minister visits Sheikh Selim’s house
Earlier, Prime Minister and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina visited Sheikh Selim’s house to see Zayan for the last time and to console the family members of the victim.
Sheikh Hasina stayed there for over an hour and consoled Zayan’s family members. A heart-rending scene was created at that time.
Sheikh Hasina also prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul of Zayan.
Zayan’s mother did not come with body
Zayan’s mother and Awami League Presidium Member Sheikh Selim’s daughter Sheikh Amena Sultana Sonia did not come to Dhaka with the body as she has been staying in Sri Lanka with her ailing husband.
Zayan’s father Mashiul Haque Chowdhury, who was injured in the blast on Easter Sunday, is still in critical condition and undergoing treatment at a hospital in Sri Lanka.
According to family sources, Mashiul started talking 12 hours after the attack and following multiple surgeries on his leg.
Sheikh Selim on Tuesday told reporters: “I spoke with my family members there in the morning. They said Mashiul’s condition is still critical, but he is improving. We will know more after 72 hours.”
He said splinters from the blast had hit Mashiul’s kidney and liver, and some of them were still in his body.
Selim, who is a cousin to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, added that doctors said it would be at least two more weeks before they could shift Mashiul.
Zayan named as JS session commences with condolences
Parliament has unanimously adopted an expanded condolence motion at its session and expressed shock at the death of Zayan Chowdhury.
At least 359 people have been killed and around 500 injured in bomb blasts that ripped through churches and luxury hotels in the Sri Lankan capital and subsurbs on Easter Sunday; the first major attack on the Indian Ocean island since the end of a civil war 10 years ago.
Zayan, one of the two sons of Sheikh Selim’s daughter Sheikh Amena Sultana Sonia, died in one of the explosions at a hotel where the family was staying.
