Barisal University (BU) students and teachers are continuing their protest movement for a fourth week, demanding the removal of Vice Chancellor Prof SM Imamul Huq for his derogatory remarks during Independence Day celebrations last month.
The students gathered in front of the BU Teachers Association (BUTA) building around 10am on Tuesday. Students are also signing a petition demanding the removal of the VC.
Vice Chancellor Prof SM Imamul Huq requested the students to go back to class.
Abu Zafar Mia, secretary of BUTA, said: “We will continue the protest until we press home our eight-point demand.”
BU students began protests on March 27, when VC, Prof SM Imamul Huq, said students who had foiled an Independence Day program were “razakaerer bachcha," or, the children of traitors.
On March 28, authorities shut the university for an indefinite period, amid student protests demanding removal of the VC for his comment.
On March 29, Prof Imamul Huq expressed regrets about his comment, saying it was misunderstood by the students.
The acting registrar and public relations officer of BU have been declared persona non grata by students, who claim they were appointed in violation of rules and regulations regarding qualifications and experience.
