A murder suspect has been killed in a reported gunfight with police in Chittagong.

The incident occurred near Agrabad area of the city, early on Tuesday.

The deceased is Jabed, a Jubo League activist accused of murdering former Chhatra League leader Mohiuddin Sohel, reports UNB.

Sudip Kumar Das, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Double Mooring police station, said that, based on information that a gang of miscreants was taking drugs on Jamburi field, a team of police conducted a drive.

He added that upon seeing the police, the miscreant opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back, leaving Jabed shot.

Later, he was taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Ashikur Rahman, senior assistant commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police, said that after spotting Jabed, a team of police, led by the OC, conducted a drive around 12:20am, reports UNB.

The OC was also shot on his right leg and is now undergoing treatment at the hospital.

The police team recovered a pistol and arms with several rounds of bullets from the spot.

Earlier on January 7, the former Chhatra League leader Mohiuddin Sohel was lynched by an angry mob at Pahartali Railway Market of the city for alleged extortion.

Sohel's family members later claimed at a press briefing that his murder was premeditated.

Shakirul Islam Shishir,  Sohel's younger brother, filed a case with Double Mooring Police Station accusing 27 named and 150 unnamed people. Jabed was one of the main accused on the case.
