Suspected drug trader killed in Sirajganj 'gunfight'

A suspected drug trader has been killed and five others detained in a reported gunfight with police in the Ullapara upazila of Sirajganj district.

The incident took place near Ghoshganti Government Primary School of the upazila around 2am on Saturday.

The deceased - Mostofa Kamal, 33 - hailed from municipal area of Kawak village. 

The detainees are Sajib Kumar Saha alias Ganesh, 24, Sanjay Chandra Saha, 19, Sony Ahmed, 35, Selim Reja, 24, and Shafiqul Islam, 19.

Police said that Inspector (Investigation) Md Golam Mostafa and Sub-Inspector Mosharraf Hossain were also injured. They have been provided first aid treatment at the Sirajganj 250-Bed Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital.

Ullapara police station Inspector (Investigation) Md Golam Mostafa said: "Based on a tip-off that drugs were being sold near Ghoshganti area of the municipal, we conducted a raid."

According to the police official, Mostafa has at least 11 cases filed against him with different police stations including Ullapara.

He said when police arrived, the drug traders opened fire at them, forcing them to strike back in self-defence. At one point, Mostofa fell to the ground, while his associates escaped. His body has been kept at the Sirajganj 250-Bed Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital.

Five more suspected drug dealers were arrested from other areas around the scene of the incident. Police recovered 21 phensedyl bottles and 80 yaba tablets from them.
