Suspected drug dealers killed in Sirajganj ‘gunfight,’ Cox’s Bazar gang war

In Sirajganj, a suspected drug trader was killed and five others detained in a reported gunfight with police in Ullapara upazila

Two suspected drug dealers were killed in separate gunfight incidents in Sirajganj and Cox’s Bazar districts yesterday. 

In Sirajganj, a suspected drug trader was killed and five others detained in a reported gunfight with police in Ullapara upazila.

The incident took place near Ghoshganti Government Primary School around 2am yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Mostofa Kamal, 33. 

The detainees are Sajib Kumar Saha alias Ganesh, 24, Sanjay Chandra Saha, 19, Sony Ahmed, 35, Selim Reja, 24, and Shafiqul Islam, 19.

Police said Inspector (Investigation) Md Golam Mostafa and Sub-Inspector Mosharraf Hossain were also injured. They received first aid at Sirajganj’s 250-bed Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital.

Ullapara police station Inspector (Investigation) Md Golam Mostafa said: "Based on a tip-off about a drug deal near the Ghoshganti area, we conducted a raid.

“When we arrived, the drug dealers opened fire, forcing us to shoot back in self-defence. At one point, Mostofa fell to the ground, while his associates escaped."

According to the police official, Mostafa had at least 11 cases filed against him with different police stations, including Ullapara.

Five more suspected drug dealers were arrested from other areas near the scene of the incident. Police recovered 21 phensedyl bottles and 80 yaba tablets from them.

In Cox’s Bazar, a suspected drug dealer was killed in a gunfight between two gangs in Teknaf upazila.

The incident took place in the Kanjarpara pahari area of Whykong union of the upazila early yesterday.

The deceased was Shahab Uddin, 42.

Teknaf Model police station OC Pradip Kumar Das said: "Two gangs of drug dealers were engaged in a gunfight. After spotting police, they escaped towards the hills.

“After raiding the place, police found a bullet-riddled body, along with two locally made guns, seven bullets, nine bullet casings, and 2,400 yaba pills at the crime scene.” 

Shahab was a drug trader in the area, and accused in several cases. His body has been sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy, the OC added.
