Woman gang raped, then tortured in arbitration

The pregnant woman was divorced by her husband a few months earlier

A six-month pregnant woman, reportedly gang raped on Tuesday by five men in Lama upazila of the district, was tortured by a UP member in the process of arbitration.

According to police sources, the pregnant woman was divorced by her husband a few months earlier. On her way to a Boishakhi fair at Fasiakhali union council of the upazila in the afternoon, with a  Noor Hossain on a rented motorbike, who took her to a field in Angharipara, where she was made to drink alcohol and was brutally  raped by Noor and his four associates. 

They fled, leaving her in critical condition in the field. Around 5 pm on the day, locals rescued the woman. 

Later, there was an arbitration concerning the rape, headed by local UP member Kamal Uddin, where the woman was tortured by Kamal and his son, Kafi Uddin.

They also took the signature of the woman on  a blank sheet of paper, on condition that she not disclose the matter.

After the incident, locals informed Lama police station about the issue.

Police took the victim and Noor Hossain into custody.

Contacted, Lama police station Officer-in-Charge, Appela Raju Naha, said the victim did not want to disclose the incident.

"If she acknowledges the incident, a case will be filed," the OC added.

UP member Kamal Uddin could not be reached over the phone. 

The mother of the victim demanded immediate arrest of the perpetrators involved in the incident.
