A teacher in Narayanganj has been sacked for beating a student 73 times with a cane for not doing his homework.

Nazmul, a teacher of Changes English Medium School, was dismissed after a decision was made at a meeting between the school authorities and guardians on Wednesday.

Nazmul on Tuesday hit Shaikat Kumar Paul, a 7th grade student, for not doing his ICT (information communication technology) homework. Shaikat was treated at a local government hospital for his injuries.

The directors of the school, guardians and teachers at Wednesday's meeting decided to sack Nazmul.

Expressing relief, the boy's father, Surith Paul, said: “Nazmul is mentally sick, otherwise a person of sound mind cannot do such a cruel thing, especially to a minor.”

“I will not take any further action on the matter, as I am satisfied with the school’s decision,” he said.

GM Faruk, a director of the school, said: “Our school was established in 2002, and we have a strict policy against beating students. Even after such instructions, the incident that took place is very saddening.

“The guilty teacher was sacked so that no other teacher can beat any student from now on.”
