People from across Bangladesh are celebrating Pohela Boishakh, the first day of Bangali New Year 1426.

The Pohela Boishakh celebration is deep-rooted in the cultural identity of Bangalis.

Pohela Boishakh celebrations started during Mughal Emperor Akbar's reign, when it was customary to clear all dues on the last day of the Bangla month, Chaitra, because businessmen would open "halkhata" —  new books of accounts for the new year.
