The students ha said they would not allow the procession to take place in Brahmanbaria or rest of the country
Qawmi Madrasa students in Brahmanbaria on Saturday vowed to foil the Mongol Shobhajatra celebration on Pohela Boishakh, but then backtracked on the declaration after a meeting with District Deputy Commissioner Hayat-ud-Dowla and Additional SP Alamgir Hossain.
The students had made the declaration after a protest rally in front of the Press Club in Brahmanbaria city on Saturday, but withdrew it after the meeting later in the evening.
About 90% of the people in the country are Muslims and that they cannot let Mongol Shobhajatra take place here, the students said at the rally.
They added that the celebration is not a part of Bangladesh’s culture and they would not allow the procession to take place in Brahmanbaria or the rest of the country.
The students had also said all students of the madrasas will be on the streets after the Fazr prayers, to resist the procession, but this is no longer the case after the meeting with the district deputy commissioner.
The students also demanded justice for Nusrat Jahan Rafi, an Alia madrasa student who was set on fire by four masked individuals, reported to be supporters of madrasa principal Md Sirajuddaula, on April 6 and died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on April 10.
Qawmi Student United Association Brahmanbaria President Hafez Maulana Mafuzur Rahman presided over the rally.
The association’s General Secretary Ansar Sarker, Hafez Maulana Ishak Al Mamun, Maulana Shakil Ahmed, and Maulana Waliullah spoke at the rally, among others.
