A suspected drug dealer has been killed in a “gunfight” with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Mohammadpur, Dhaka.

Nabi Hossain, 47, was killed in the incident that occurred around 5:15am on Thursday.

RAB said Nabi was a known yaba dealer in Geneva Camp and he used to smuggle yaba from Teknaf and Cox's Bazer to Dhaka.

In a SMS, RAB said two members of their team were also injured in the incident.

RAB 2 Company Commander Mohiuddin Faruque told the Dhaka Tribune that they received information about Nabi and his associates delivering a yaba consignment.

He said: “We conducted a raid in the Sayedabad area, but we could not catch them. Later, we set up check post in Asadgate area, but they somehow evaded us again.

“Then we found them in a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Dhaka Uddan Housing area. They opened fire at us when we tried to stop the vehicle.”

He said RAB fired back in self defense that left Nabi injured.

Nabi’s associate and the auto-rickshaw driver managed to flee the scene, the RAB commander added.

Mohiuddin Faruque said Nabi was declared dead when taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).

“Nabi was accused in several cases lodged with different police stations.”

“We are trying to arrest the people who fled the scene,” Mohiuddin said.

A foreign made pistol, bullets and 10,000 pieces of yaba pills were recovered from the spot, it said.
