A man in Lalmonirhat has been detained for allegedly pouring kersone on his wife and setting her on fire.
The incident occurred at the victim's home in Newpurbapara area under Patgram Municipality, of Lalmonirhat, around 7pm on Monday.
The victim, identified as Rozina Begum, 20, has been sent to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) for better treatment. She has burns to different parts of her body from under her neck to her legs, sources confirmed. She hails from Joldhaka area of Nilphamari.
According to a confessional statement of the victim, Monsur Ali, officer in charge (OC) of Patgram Police Station said: “Rozina and her husband, Abdullah were expecting guests at their house. Right before the Maghrib, the victim asked her husband to fix the house toilet. This infuratied Abdullah and he poured kerosene on her and set her on fire.”
As confirmed by the Ward Commissioner Azizul Haq Dulal, the locals captured the husband and handed him over to police. They also rescued the victim and took her to Patgram Upazila Health Complex. Later with the help of the Mayor Shomsher Ali and Azizul Haq Dulal, she was transferred to RMCH.
While describing the incident, neighbors Jobed Ali and Matluba Rahman said: “Rozina, a mother of one, was often a victim of physical torture by Abdullah. On Monday, when he set her on fire, she cried out for help. The neighbors immediately rushed there and rescued her.”
Confirming the detention of Rozina’s husband, OC Monsur Ali said: “A case is being prepared about this incident.”
Abdul Karim, UNO of Patgram upazila said: “Immediately after being informed of the incident, the hospital was instructed for proper treatment. The OC of Patgram Police Station was requested to take necessary strict actions in this regard.”
There had been multiple cases of theft and drug smuggling against Abdullah, according to police.
