Days before the Feni madrasa student was set ablaze, her family had asked for security from police and local administration after receiving threats.

According to her family, they were receiving threats ever since they filed a case on March 27.

The victim’s brother Mahmudul Hasan Noman told the Dhaka Tribune: “My sister was pressured to withdraw her accusations of sexual harassment against Principal Sirajuddaula. The people who pressured were students at the madrasa – Nur Uddin, Shamim, Javed, and Mohiuddin Shakil. They were patronized by Moksudur Rahman, a local Awami League leader who is also a member of the madrasa’s governing body.

“They started threatening after we formed a human chain on March 28. They formed a counter-human chain in protest as well in order to protect the principal. We informed the Sonagazi UNO and the municipality mayor and the police. They all assured us it was nothing. I let sister sit for exams because of their reassurances.”

Moazzem Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sonagazi Model police station, denied all allegations of neglect and said: “Neither the girl nor her family informed the police about feeling unsafe or threatened. We acted promptly and judiciously against the principal. We have also provided counseling to her family for their ordeal.”

Sonagazi municipality Mayor Rafiqul Islam Khokon, also the general secretary of Sonagazi Awami League unit, said: “The family did tell me of their concerns, and I conveyed them to the police and media as well. It is regrettable that we failed to ensure her security.”

Narikpokkho, a women’s rights group, strongly protested the act of senseless violence in a press release yesterday.

Case filed, 6 arrested

The victim’s brother filed a case yesterday with Sonagazi police. Immediately afterwards, police arrested six people suspected of being involved in the attack.
