The establishments did not have environmental clearances or government approval
The mobile court of the Department of Environment—during a drive—has fined 12 brick kilns, in Narayanganj Sadar upazila, Tk41.50 lakh.
The drive, headed by the Department of Environment Executive Magistrate Kazi Tamzid Ahmed, was conducted on Sunday.
Narayanganj Department of Environment Deputy Assistant Director Nayan Mia, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) 11 Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mostafizur Rahman—along with several members of law enforcement and the fire service—were present during the drive.
Deputy Assistant Director Nayan Mia said: “Many brick kiln owners are running business without government approval. This is completely illegal.
“This is detrimental to the environment as well. We conducted the drive at Boktaboli union of Narayanganj and fined 12 brick kilns Tk41.50 lakh.”
The mobile court found that the establishments did not have environmental clearances or government approval.
A brick kiln named National Brick Field was partially destroyed using machinery, and members of the fire service used water to douse the kiln.
Executive Magistrate Kazi Tamzid Ahmed said: “We began the drive on Sunday afternoon and continued throughout the evening. We will inspect the remaining kilns in the area as well. We have warned the owners not to run business without proper licenses.”
Boktaboli Brick Owners Association President Showkat Ali, who is also the UP chairman, said: “I request all owners to abide by the laws prescribed by the government. I do not support anyone illegally conducting business.”
