A woman died while trying to recover valuables from her burning house in Kushtia's Bheramara upazila in the early hours of Wednesday.

The deceased Saleha Begum, 55, was a resident of Ramchandrapur village in Dharmpur union, and wife of Ansar Ali.

According to locals, Ansar made a fire to produce smoke in their cowshed to save his cattle from mosquitoes. Later in the night, the straws caught fire and spread to the cowshed. The fire later engulfed their house, kitchen and killed all three cattle.

Saleha burned to death in the flame while trying to recover valuables from their house.

Locals after failing to douse the flames called the firefighters. Two firefighting units brought the fire under control soon after arriving at the scene, said Prabir Kumar Debnath, station officer of Kushtia Fire Service and Civil Defence.

Dharmpur Union Parishad Chairman Shahabul Alam Lalu said the fire completely gutted the couple’s house. “We will provide necessary support to the family."
