Four Rohingya women were detained from the Kurigram local passport office, trying to apply for a passport for themselves around 4:30pm on Wednesday.
Another Bangladeshi woman has been detained in connection with assisting the Rohingyas. Local sources confirmed.
The detainees are Alea, 18, Nuri Kha, 18, Fatema, 22, and Meem, 18 . Police refused to disclose the Bangladeshi detainee's name as there is an ongoing investigation.
Kurigram passport office Deputy Assistant Director (DAD), Abdul Mottaleb Sarkar said: “When some women came to our office to apply for passporst, we informed the police on suspicion.”
Officer-in-Charge(OC) of Kurigram Police Station, Rowshon Kabir, said: “The Bangladeshi woman is under interrogation to find out about suspects in connection with trafficking.”
Following an investigation, cases will be filed against those who have helped the detainees, the OC added.
