Neighbours, hearing the screams, rushed to the house and found Ratna dead, and others in dire need of medical attention
A man attacked his family, in a fit of rage, brutally hacking his wife and two daughters, and smashing the skull of his infant daughter.
On Monday morning, stone miner Nazimul Islam, 40, got into a dispute with his wife Rashida Khatun, 28. Nazimul took, possibly a cleaver or a hatchet, and attacked Rashida. Their daughters, Nazira and Riya, aged 10 and 6 years, who tried to stop the onslaught, were also cut mercilessly by Nazimul.
He then turned to his six months old daughter Ratna and threw her to the ground.
Neighbours, hearing the screams, rushed to the house and found Ratna dead, and others in dire need of medical attention.
The incident took place in Purbojoydhorbhanga, a village in Chaklahat union of Panchagarh’s sadar upazila.
The survivors of the attack were admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
Rashida’s father, Rashidul Islam, told the Dhaka Tribune: “Nazimul and his family had been tormenting and abusing my daughter for a very long time. We filed a case two-three years ago, but settled it through local arbitration. Because of his work, he frequently stays out. He spent the past few days in Nilphamari and returned home on Saturday. I got a call in the morning telling me that he killed one of my granddaughters and hurt the other two along with my daughter.”
Neighbours have confirmed that domestic disputes frequently occurred between Nazimul and Rashida. They also said that Nazimul fled the area with his family after the incident.
Abu Akkas Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Panchagarh police station said, the police suspect domestic dispute may have been the cause behind this savagery. He said, police is working on arresting the involved persons.
