Residents of Sirajganj city suffered seven hours of power outage after the utility provider suspended services without any prior notice.
The Northern Electricity Supply Company Limited’s (Nesco) feeder in the city was shut down from 9am to 7pm on Thursday.
According to the Nesco customer policy, customers must be warned before a shutdown if it extends over half an hour.
Locals said that Nesco has developed a habit of shutting down power without prior notice which often causes difficulty for the consumers.
About two weeks ago, two Nesco employees, Lineman Aminul and Complain Attendant Abdul Kuddus were suspended in connection with the irregularities in power cut-off schedule. Despite the chief engineer’s warnings, yet another incident irregular power outage occurred on Thursday.
In 2018, three other Nesco officials were suspended because eight people, including three schoolchildren, were electrocuted after they came in contact with exposed power lines in the village of Kadai in Sirajganj sadar upazila.
Aminul Islam, who owns a saw-mill, said they could have been prepared if they received a prior notice.
Nesco Rajshahi Chief Engineer Dilruba Ahsan said: "The power was out because power lines were being removed in a four-lane road. But Nesco should have warned the people. We will look into the matter so this does not occur in the future."
Nesco Managing Director Zakiul Islam could not be reached for comments.
