The accident occurred on the Dhaka-Barisal highway in Kolabari area of Madaripur Sadar upazila
Seven passengers have been killed, and 45 others have been injured, in a road accident in Madaripur.
A bus plunged into a ditch on the Dhaka-Barisal highway in Kolabari area of Madaripur Sadar upazila, around 11:45am on Thursday.
The deceased are: Habi Hawladar,50; Abbas Khan, 32; Hasia Begum, 55; Hasan, 14; Akkas, 40; Noyon, 27; and Sayem, 25. All of them were from different upazilas of Madaripur.
The injured were admitted to Madaripur sadar hospital and Faridpur Medical College and Hospital. The death toll might rise as some of the injured are in critical condition.
Following the incident, the Dhaka-Barisal highway was closed for two hours.
According to Police, the Fire Service, and local sources, the bus was heading to Madaripur from an Islamic program. The accident occurred when the bus tried to avoid colliding with a truck in Kalabari area. The driver lost control over the steering and veered off the road, plunging into a roadside ditch.
Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, Madaripur Superintendent of Police (SP)Subrata Kumar Halder said: “Acting on information, Police and Fire Service personnel rushed to spot. Seven people have been killed and the death toll may rise.”
Akhil Sarker, on-duty physician of Madaripur Sadar Hospital’s emergency department, said: “Forty-five people were injured in the accident and are undergoing treatment at the hospital. However, those who are in critical condition were sent to Faridpur Medical College and Hospital for treatment.”
